Why Have I Been Told My Professional Cleaning Will Take More Than One Appointment?
If you have been seeing a dentist regularly for preventive recare, your periodontal (gum) health is usually stable. Your professional cleaning (preventive care) can be thoroughly completed within an hour.
If it has been a while since you have been seen, or if you have a genetic predisposition to the bacteria that cause periodontal (gum) disease, we have to take a more assertive approach to regain the health of your gums. This can often be accomplished with non-surgical periodontal therapy (root planing and scaling or deep cleanings). NSPT (nonsurgical periodontal therapy) requires anywhere from 2 to 4 appointments, of a 1-to-2-hour duration for each. Our hygienists will work closely with you to educate and empower you to better gum health.
