Dental Crowns

A damaged or missing tooth not only affects your smile but is also detrimental to your oral health. Fortunately, at Avalon Family Dentistry, we offer restorative dental procedures such as dental crowns using trusted techniques, advanced technology, and high-quality materials to give you and your family bright, healthy smiles. You will love your new restorations because they will feel and look like your natural teeth.

What Are Dental Crowns?

They are restorations that encase deeply decayed, chipped, fractured, misshapen, discolored, or damaged teeth to restore their strength, functionality, and natural form. Dental crowns can match teeth in terms of texture and appearance. You can also choose different materials to suit your aesthetic needs and preferences, including porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and gold.

Who Needs a Dental Crown?

You may need to get a dental crown if you have severe tooth decay or a cracked, damaged, chipped, or fractured tooth.  A dental crown is a necessity following a root canal on any back tooth because the tooth becomes brittle following the root canal and can run the risk of fracturing. You should also consider it to enhance your aesthetics, strengthen a silver filling, or boost the outcomes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

How Are Dental Crowns Designed and Placed?

The placement and design process for dental crowns depends on the material. Porcelain-fused-to-gold, gold, and full porcelain crowns are designed and made at an off-site laboratory. You will need two different office visits to get these types of crowns.

You will undergo a tooth examination to determine if you need a repair. The doctor will remove the decayed and damaged parts carefully before reshaping your tooth and restoring a firm foundation for the crown.  Also at the first appointment, we will take the master impression or scan for the crown and place a tooth-colored temporary crown.  The temporary crown is important to keep the tooth from being sensitive and, most importantly, to keep the tooth from moving.  This helps ensure when the doctor places the crown over your tooth, it will have a perfect fit, and cementing it permanently will be as straightforward as possible.

What Are Partial Crowns?

Partial crowns are also known as onlays and inlays and are used to repair teeth that cannot be restored with dental fillings but are not too damaged to require dental crowns. Inlays usually cover a damaged tooth’s chewing surface while onlays replace tooth cusps.

How Do You Take Care of Your Restored Teeth?

The care routine for natural teeth also applies for restored teeth. Therefore, floss and brush regularly, and visit Avalon Family Dentistry for your preventive dental cleanings and exams at least every six months to let us monitor your restorations and oral health. With proper care, you will enjoy your dental crowns for many years.
