In the months of May and June, we celebrate two holidays where the people celebrated routinely sacrifice and put the needs of everyone else above their own. We are talking about Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
The team at Avalon Family Dentistry would like to challenge the thought of routine sacrifice being the best thing. Sometimes, a little self-care, and dare we say indulgence, will raise a person’s level of joy. It will raise a person’s self-esteem. These things make for healthier mommas and daddies, and therefore, happier families.
Here are some relatively easy self-care, dental ideas you may not have thought. Any of these will make a significant difference in your health and your joy!
- An electric toothbrush and a WaterPik.
How often do we, as parents, rush through our self-care routines because of “other” responsibilities? Over time, this will catch up with us. It comes in the form of “puffy” gums, stained teeth, and sensitivity when we come in for our routine recare appointments (making them less than routine!) If inadequate homecare remains in place for too long, it can lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease.
A Sonicare or OralB Electric toothbrush takes the guess work and hard work out of your homecare routine! Both have two-minute timers on them and do a vastly superior job to any manual toothbrushing that we do at home.
The WaterPik does NOT take the place of flossing. It does, however, push water, and therefore oxygen, into and around your gum pockets. The bacteria that causes gum disease is destroyed by oxygen!
When you teeth are not sensitive, and your gums are pink and healthy, it will only have a positive impact on our outlook of life!
Teeth Whitening, in our humble opinion, is the single easiest thing you can do to improve the look of your teeth. In turn, it improves your appreciation of your teeth and your smile.
There is an abundance of gimmicks out there regarding whitening. You will hear some people say only in-office treatments work, others say only custom take-home kits work. Let’s not even get us started on the multitude of over-the-counter and informercial products that can do more harm than good to your teeth!
Our experience has shown the majority of our patients can achieve the whitening they desire with Ultradent GOTrays. This is a non-customized, dentist prescribed system of 10 tray applications. The cost is only $75. A patient may occasionally need something more, which we can discuss on a case-by-case basis!
There are many people, still, who believe that straight teeth is unattainable. This stems from either the thought of cost or time.

While all of the ideas mentioned above are the most conservative options and are all amazing, sometimes they are not enough!
