National Facial Protection Month

Why is Facial Protection So Important?

Did you know that April is not only National Youth Sports Safety Month, but also National Facial Protection Month?

In the Pacific Northwest, we are blessed to be in an area where our children have the opportunity to be involved in a plethora of sports!  Because of this, your dentist in Federal Way, Dr. Josephine Lee, feels it is very important to keep our children as protected at possible!

Research estimates that about 2% of all children or adolescents who participate in sports will eventually suffer a facial injury serious enough to require medical attention.

According to the American Dental Association article, National Facial Protection Month strives to raise public awareness and remind us as parents/caregivers, coaches, and athletes to play it safe while playing sports.

One of the best ways to prevent injuries to the teeth and jaw is with a custom-fitted sports guard.  Sports accidents reportedly account for 10-39% of all dental injuries in children.  No child is ever guaranteed to escape this statistic!  Dr. Lee’s own son suffered a traumatic tooth injury while playing baseball just a couple of years ago.

The Dental Associations offer the following tips that your Federal Way dentist, Dr. Lee, and her team whole-heartedly agrees with.

  • Wear a custom sports guard when playing contact sports.  A custom sports guard is much less expensive, and much less traumatic, than the cost of repairing an injured tooth or jaw.
  • Wear a helmet
  • Wear protective eyewear
  • Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
  • Make protective gear mandatory for ALL sports.  Athletes who participate in football, hockey, and boxing are all required to wear mouth protection.  If sports guards have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of oral injuries, why is it not mandatory for every sport kids participate in?
